POWER PLAYS COME TO LIFE IN GRAND RAPIDS
IceHogs travel to face Griffins tonight at Van Andel
Grand Rapids, Mich.- With a three-game losing streak, the Rockford IceHogs are hoping that a trip to Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins at Van Andel Arena tonight at 6:05 p.m. is the remedy to fix their recent losing ways.
Ryan Potulny gave Rockford a 1-0 first period lead when he tallied his 11th goal of the season on a power play. Potulny knocked in his marker off of a cross-ice feed from Jeff Taffe at 5:30 of the opening frame.
Grand Rapids responded with a four-on-four goal at 10:26 to tie the game at 1-1. On a two-on-one break, Tomas Tater beat Alec Richards between the pads for his 11th marker of the year, set up by Derek Meech.
Potulny and the IceHogs came right back on the power play to re-establish their lead. The winger notched his second goal of the game when he redirected a Brian Connelly slap shot past Jordan Pearce at 16:00.
But again Grand Rapids responded to tie the game back up before the break. Illari Filppula banked in his 16th goal while the Griffins skated on the advantage at 19:25 of the opening period.
Power plays continued to excel in the second period as Grand Rapids grabbed a 3-2 lead early in the frame. Chris Minard picked up a Francis Pare rebound and wrapped it around Richards at 1:22 for his sixth goal of the season.
Fans can tune into tonight’s game on 1330 AM WNTA, on-line at www.wnta.com or on Comcast Cable Channel-57 beginning at 6:35 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Pregame Show. The game can be viewed on the Web through www.ahllive.com.
Entering tonight’s match-up against the Griffins, Rockford is 10-0-0-1 against their foes from the North Division over their past 11 games, including 3-0-0-0 this season. Tonight’s game is the fourth of six on the season between the two clubs and second of three at Van Andel.
Grand Rapids enters play tonight on a three-game slide (0-2-0-1) as well after a 3-2 loss in Rochester on Wednesday night. The Griffins sit in sixth place in the North Division, seven points out of a guaranteed playoff spot.
Alec Richards is expected to get the start in goal tonight and has fared well against Grand Rapids in his young career. In six career appearances against Grand Rapids, Richards carries a record of 5-0-0-0 with a .925 save percentage against the Griffins.
Rockford’s penalty kill continues its hot play as the special team’s unit has not allowed a power-play tally in six straight games. During that time frame, the IceHogs have killed off 25-straight man advantages and currently rank 15th in the AHL, stopping 83.2% of their opponent’s power plays.

PIRRI’S PAIR NOT ENOUGH FOR ROCKFORD
Hogs fall 3-2 in Peoria
Peoria, Ill.-Rookie winger Brandon Pirri notched two goals and Hannu Toivonen made 32 saves, but it wasn’t enough as the Peoria Rivermen slipped by the IceHogs 3-2 with a late third period goal at Carver Arena.
After Rockford and Peoria went scoreless in the game’s first 19-minutes, both teams tallied in the final minute of period one. Chris Porter lit the first lamp at 19:01 of the frame moments after Peoria’s power play came to an end. Porter picked up a Nicholas Drazenovic pass and beat Hannu Toivonen over the right shoulder in traffic.
Just 39-seconds later Rockford tied the game at 1-1. Brian Connelly threaded a pass to Pirri who beat Rivermen goalie Ben Bishop on a breakaway for his sixth goal of the season at 19:40.
Peoria reclaimed their lead in the second period off of a Rockford turnover. TJ Hensick picked off a Ryan Stanton pass and fed Anthony Peluso in front of Toivonen for his fifth goal of the year at 2:51.
In the third period, Pirri would tie the game with his second marker of the night. Igor Makarov was able to free a puck to Mathis Olimb in traffic and the winger found Pirri in the slot and he pounded home his seventh goal of the season at 5:52 of the final frame.
But moments after Rockford failed to convert on their fifth power play of the night, Peoria grabbed a lead that they would hold up. Hensick picked up a Graham Mink rebound and knocked in the game winner at 16:54 for his 11th goal of the season.
Rockford held Peoria off the board on five power plays. The IceHogs peppered Bishop with 37 shots, but the Rivermen backstop halted 35 of them.
Next Home Game: Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Milwaukee Admirals: The puck gets on the ice at 7:05 p.m. The IceHogs match-up with the Milwaukee Admirals for a fifth time this season and third at the Rockford MetroCentre. HOGS CAN'T BOUNCE BACK, FALL 4-1 TO RAMPAGE
Rockford, Ill- Coming off a Friday night loss, the Rockford IceHogs weren't able to bounce back falling 4-1 to the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday at the Rockford MetroCentre on Pink in the Rink Night.
Rockford started out firing against the Rampage missing on point blank opportunities that could have given them a much needed early lead.
But in one short break San Antonio jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. A defensive miscue inside the Hogs offensive zone left the puck out to Ned Lukacevic. Lukacevic moved the puck up to Jamie Bates on a breakaway and he backhanded the puck over Alec Richards' blocker at 12:48. Nolan Yonkman also picked up an assist on the play.
Shortly into the second period after both teams received offsetting minor penalties the teams would skate four on four, but a failed clearing attempt inside Rockford's defensive zone would prove to be costly. Andrew Ebbett intercepted an IceHogs clearing attempt and quickly passed the puck over to Mathieu Beaudoin. Beaudoin elevated the puck over Richards' glove giving San Antonio a 2-0 lead. Jonas Ahnelov was credited with the second assist.
With a San Antonio penalty carrying into the third period Rockford cut the Rampage lead in half. Richards sent the puck up to Shawn Lalonde and he located Jeff Taffe moving in around the left circle. Taffe faked a shot and moved in close to slip the puck under the pads of Al Montoya at :54, making it 2-1 Rampage.
San Antonio, however, wouldn't let the Hogs stay close for long. A minute after Rockford killed off another penalty, San Antonio pulled away with Lukacevic's second goal of the night at 5:30 in the third. David Brine started the puck up to Bates. Bates fed Lukacevic inside the Rampage offensive zone and he put the puck past Richards to give the Rampage a 3-1 lead.
Right after Rockford called a timeout to pull Richards for an extra attacker, Bracken Kearns moved down on a breakaway and picked up the empty-net goal at 18:17 to seal the game at 4-1.
Notes: Rockford's crowd of 6,267 was the largest of the season and the IceHogs second sellout of 2010-11. Alec Richards made 21 saves on 24 shots in a losing effort, while Al Montoya stopped 32-of-33 shots in the win. Rockford held off the AHL's best power-play, killing off all five shorthanded situations. Kyle Beach's six-game point streak came to an end, scoring seven points (3g-4a). Following a regulation loss the IceHogs were 12-2-0-2 entering tonight's contest.
Next Home Game: Saturday, Jan. 29, vs. Milwaukee Admirals. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,500 fans to the game will receive an IceHogs Winter Hat compliments of Rasmussen College, ESPN 1380 AM and FOX 39.
BARONS SNAP ICEHOGS WIN STREAK
Rockford, Ill-Two, two-goal deficits were too much for the Rockford IceHogs to overcome on Friday night as the Oklahoma City Barons cooled them off 4-3 at the Rockford MetroCentre.
It didn't take the Barons long to strike it rich. At 6:34 of the first period Bryan Helmer wristed the puck towards Hannu Toivonen and Greg Stewart redirected it to the back of the net. Ryan O'Mara also registered an assist on the play.
Oklahoma City extended their lead to make it 2-0 at 9:31. Colin McDonald corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone, he moved it down the right side and wristed it in over Toivonen's glove.
The IceHogs got one back to bring them back down one at 11:50. Mathis Olimb faked a shot at the blue line, passed it to Shawn Lalonde who then found Jeff Taffe. Taffe blasted a shot over the glove of Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, to cut Oklahoma's lead to 2-1, netting his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Rockford tied the game 2-2 to open the second period at 4:22. Brandon Pirri found Igor Makarov in the right face-off circle and Makarov slapped in his fifth goal of the season. Rob Klinkhammer also factored in with a helper.
The Barons re-gained the lead as McDonald shelved his second goal of the night. Brad Moran dished the puck to McDonald on a two-on-one break and he ripped the shot top shelf at 16:22. Richard Petiot chipped in with an assist.
Less than a minute later Alexandre Giroux slipped one passed Toivonen at 17:01. Moran found a loose puck in front of Rockford's net, his attempt got caught in traffic. Giroux took advantage of the chaos to make it 4-2 with Rockford in the hole.
Peter LeBlanc opened the third period with a goal at 1:51. Kyle Beach dropped a pass back to the point and on to the stick of Dylan Olsen. Olsen quickly fired a slap shot into traffic that made its way off of LeBlanc's stick to the back of the net.
That’s all Rockford could get past Deslauriers, despite playing the final 90-seconds with an extra attacker on. The Hogs peppered the Barons puckstopper with 29 shots. Toivonen was tagged with the loss after making 10 saves. Alec Richards turned away all six third period shots in relief in the third period.
Notes: Kyle Beach extended his point streak six-games (3g-4a). Rockford held the Barons to a season low shots against with 20. Tonight marked the first time all season the IceHogs scored three goals and didn't pick up a point.
Next Home Game: Saturday, Jan. 22 vs. San Antonio Rampage. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. The ice will be pink for the IceHogs' Pink In The Rink Night! The first 2,500 fans to the game will receive a Pink In The Rink T-shirt and the IceHogs will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness and Research.

TWO THIRD PERIOD GOALS LIFT ROCKFORD
Former IceHogs and current Blackhawks Corey Crawford, Jack Skille and Jack Dowell drop the ceremonial first puck on Monday during Chicago Blackhawks Day at the Rockford MetroCentre. (Photo courtesy of Greg Hamil)
Rockford, Ill.- Two third period goals by the Rockford IceHogs allowed the team to extend their winning streak to a season-high three-games, defeating the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 on Monday afternoon at the Rockford MetroCentre.
The IceHogs found themselves in a familiar spot. Just as they were on Saturday, the IceHogs were scoreless entering the third period. Despite being kept off the scoreboard, Rockford controlled the offensive action through the first two periods, outshooting the Rampage throughout 24-12.
It didn’t take Rockford long, however, to capitalize in the third period. While in their defensive zone Brian Connelly was able to knock down a puck and send it up to Kyle Beach. Beach passed it up to Evan Brophey and with his arms stretched out to catch the pass, he gathered it in and shot it over the blocker of Matt Climie at 13-seconds, for a 1-0 IceHogs advantage.
The IceHogs looked to extend their lead midway through the final period. Off of a Brandon Pirri offensive zone face off win, Garnett Exelby moved a backhanded pass to winger Hugh Jessiman from the point. Jessiman quickly fired a slapshot and with Pirri in front of Climie the puck snuck past him at 8:23, making it 2-0.
Just when the IceHogs gave themselves some extra breathing room, San Antonio would make the finish a little more interesting. Just under a minute and half later, a goal by Andrew Ebbett closed the Hogs lead to 2-1. Ebbett swiped in the goal at 9:50, which was assisted by Ryan Hollweg and Jamie Bates.
Rockford outshot San Antonio 37-25 and Toivonen picked up his third straight win.
NOTES: Toivonen stopped 24 of 25 shots and received the number one star of the game, while San Antonio’s Matt Climie stopped 35 of 37 shots in the loss. Both teams went scoreless on the power play. Hugh Jessiman’s goal was his 100th career professional goal, and his 192nd professional point. Today’s win marked the third straight victory for the IceHogs, the longest win streak of the season, while San Antonio extended their losing streak to 5 games.
Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 21 vs. Oklahoma City Barons. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. Rockford hosts Oklahoma City for a second time this season and the first 2,500 fans will receive IceHogs Fleece Gloves courtesy of Ferrell Gas and ESPN 1380 AM WTJK.

Beach’s goal only marker in 1-0 win
Rosemont, Ill.-Back-to-back wins have been hard to come by this season for the Rockford IceHogs. Behind a 32-save performance by Hannu Toivonen, the IceHogs picked up their second straight win and moved two-games above .500 for the first time this season.
Rockford notched the only goal in the only frame that they didn’t control. Rookie winger Kyle Beach picked up a Ryan Stanton pass in the Wolves zone and sniped his ninth goal of the season over the shoulder of Drew MacIntyre at 9:38 of the third period.
After making 15 saves through the first two frames, Toivonen faced 17 third period shots from Chicago and stopped them all for his second shutout of the season.
Rockford doubled up Chicago on the shots in the second frame 14-7, but neither team could crack the goalies. The best chance of the period came 1:40 into the stanza when Rob Klinkhammer was denied by MacIntyre on a penalty shot.
Not to be overlooked was Rockford’s penalty kill which held Chicago to 0-5 on the power play. Rockford came up empty on the power play as well, going 0-4. Chicago outshot Rockford 32-27.
Next Home Game: Monday, Jan. 17 vs. San Antonio Rampage: Puck drop is at 3:05 p.m. It’s Blackhawks Day and kids 14 and under get in for $5. TOIVONEN, HOGS SHOOT DOWN STARS 3-1
Rockford, Ill.- It was a different game, but the same result as the Rockford IceHogs knocked off the Texas Stars 3-1 at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Rockford put up eight goals against the Stars during their last meeting on Dec. 8, at the MetroCentre but three were good enough on Friday night.
After a scoreless first period, Kyle Beach gave the IceHogs a 1-0 lead to start the middle frame. Rob Klinkhammer found Beach streaking into the Texas zone and he ripped a shot past Bachman at 2:10.
Texas got the equalizer to open the final frame. Greg Rallo found Colton Sceviour and he fired one past Hannu Toivonen to make it 1-1 at 1:38. Maxime Fortunus also registered an assist on the play.
The Hogs answered right back and regained the lead as Jeremy Morin found the back of the net. Mathis Olimb sent a pass in front of the Texas net for Morin to chip in for his eighth goal of the season and give the IceHogs a 2-1 lead at 2:47 in the third period. Shawn Lalonde was also credited with a helper.
Then, Ryan Potulny sealed the game as he tacked on an empty-net goal with help from Jeff Taffe and Jassen Cullimore at 19:25.
Toivonen picked up his eighth win of the season turning away 29-of-30 chances. Bachman stopped 30 shots in a losing effort for Texas. Both power plays were ineffective as Rockford went 0-for-3 with the extra man and Texas failed on all six chances.

ROCKFORD FALLS BACK TO EVEN WITH A 4-2 LOSS TO HOUSTON
Rockford, Ill- A back-and-forth affair didn’t land in the Rockford IceHogs favor as they fell 4-2 to the Houston Aeros on Wednesday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Houston tallied first to take the 1-0 lead at 12:13 in the first period. Warren Peters won the faceoff in Rockford’s zone and kicked it to Justin Falk and he wristed one by Alec Richards top-shelf stick-side from 55 feet.
Rockford answered back at 13:50 to tie the game 1-1. Kyle Beach fired a shot on net and the puck ended up sitting in front of Matt Hackett. Rob Klinkhammer picked up the loose puck and chipped in his sixth goal of the season. Shawn Lalonde factored in on the play with a helper.
Moments later, the Aeros took a 2-1 lead at 16:55 in the opening frame. With Houston on a power play Robbie Earl found Peters in the slot and he slapped in the goal, his eighth of the season.
The IceHogs responded to open the third period and knotted the game at 2-2. Jeff Taffe intercepted an Aeros pass in the Houston zone and dished it to an open Ryan Potulny for the one timer at 2:39.
The Aeros answered back and regained the lead. Jarod Palmer passed the rubber to Chad Rau from the right corner and Rau one-timed it past Richards for the 3-2 lead at 7:18. Matt Prosser factored in on the play with an assist.
The IceHogs pulled Richards in favor of the extra attacker in the remaining minutes of the game, but couldn’t connect on any shots. Colton Gillies sealed the deal with an empty netter at 19:42 to give Houston a 4-2 win. Peters picked up his third point of the game with an assist.
Richards made 18 saves on 21 Houston shots while Hackett turned away 27 shots to earn the win. The IceHogs failed to connect on any of their power play attempts going 0-for-5. Meanwhile, the Aeros scored on one of their three power play chances.

VISHNEVSKIY'S TWO GOALS IGNITES ROCKFORD'S OFFENSE
01/08/2011 7:45 PM - Defense gets offensive in 6-0 win
Rockford, Ill.- If there has been one constant thing for the Rockford IceHogs in 2010-11, it's been against Grand Rapids as the Hogs trounced the Griffins 6-0 on Saturday at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Rockford is 3-0-0-0 against the Griffins in 2010-11 and the IceHogs have picked up points in 11-straight games (10-0-0-1) against Grand Rapids.
Defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and Shawn Lalonde ignited Rockford's offense with three tallies in the opening frame.
Ben Smith picked up a pass from Evan Brophey and fired it in on Joey MacDonald who knocked it down but the Griffins couldn't clear it. Vishnevskiy picked up the loose puck and sent it to the back of the net to put the Hogs up 1-0 at 4:35 in the first.
Then, just four seconds into an IceHogs power play Vishnevskiy notched his second goal of the night. Smith won the faceoff and sent the puck back to Vishnevskiy and he ripped a shot past MacDonald to make it 2-0 at 5:51.
The IceHogs extended their lead to 3-0 as Lalonde got in on the scoring. Kyle Beach dished the puck to Lalonde and he blasted one from just inside the blue line to light the lamp at 15:06 in the first stanza. Brian Connelly also registered an assist on the play.
Rockford opened the second period the same way they finished the first and added to their lead. Smith dropped a pass off for Connelly just outside the right face-off circle and he wristed in his fourth of the season at :34 in the second period. Brophey picked up his second assist as Smith added his third.
The Hogs quickly made it 5-0 as Jeff Taffe scored his team-leading tenth of the season. Ryan Potulny picked up a pass from Mathis Olimb behind the Griffins net and sent a pass out in front for Taffe to one-time it over the glove of Jordan Pearce at 3:47 in the second period.
Then the IceHogs tacked on another at 8:13 in the third period to finish the Griffins off. Peter LeBlanc picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and fed Beach skating over the blue line. Beach wristed the puck from the point and it slipped past Pearce to the back of the net. Garnet Exelby also factored in with an assist on the play.
Alec Richards stopped all 22 shots he faced to pick up his second shutout on the campaign. MacDonald was tagged with the loss turning away 12-of-16 attempts before being chased from the game. Pearce stopped 17-of-19 shots in relief for Grand Rapids.
The IceHogs power play converted on 1-of-5 man advantages while holding Grand Rapids off the board with only one chance.
Next Home Game: Wednesday, Jan. 12 vs. Houston Aeros: Puck drop is at 6:35 p.m. Wednesdays are Dollar Days at the MetroCentre. Fans can enjoy dollar Bud Selects, Vienna Beef hotdogs, Pepsi Products and companion tickets.

01/07/2011 11:30 AM - Rockford, Ill.- A three-goal first period was enough for the Toronto Marlies to knock off the Rockford IceHogs, 5-1, on Friday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.
The IceHogs got the scoring started. With the Marlies on the power play, a mishandled puck was left sitting behind Toronto's net. Igor Makarov was quick to capitalize on the mistake and wrapped the puck around for the shorthanded goal on an unaware Ben Scrivens at 1:22 in the first period.
The Marlies answered back quickly to tie the game at 1-1. Still on the power play, Simon Gysbers fired a slap shot from just inside the blueline that Jeff Cowan redirected past Hannu Toivonen. Juraj Mikus also factored in on the play.
Then, Toronto grabbed the lead when Marcel Mueller found Nazem Kadri open at the right circle. Kadri wristed a shot on net and Brayden Irwin was there to redirect the shot past Toivonen to make it 2-1 at 4:24 in the first.
The Marlies tacked on another marker with another redirected goal shortly after. Mikus found Richard Greenop at the left circle and he fired a shot on net. The puck deflected off of Jay Rosehill and it slipped past Toivonen to make it 3-1 at 5:51, ending Toivonen’s night. Alec Richards came in to replace Toivonen in net.
In the second period Kadri stick handled the puck by an IceHogs defender and fired from the right hash. The shot beat Richards glove side to make it 4-1 at 13:54. Mueller and Keith Aulie were credited with assists on the play.
Late in the third period, the Marlies put the IceHogs away when Mueller slid a puck under Richards pads in a scuffle around the net to make it 5-1 at 15:36 on the power play. Kadri and Matt Lashoff factored in on the play with the helper.
The IceHogs went 0-for-3 on the power play and the Marlies connected on two of their six power play attempts.
Richards came in to relieve Toivonen and made 24 saves on 26 shots. Scrivens turned away 34-of-35 Rockford chances to pick up the win.
Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 7 vs. the Toronto Marlies. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. Rockford returns home for the first time in 2011 for their annual home tilt against Toronto. The game is the first of two on the campaign with the Marlies.

ICEHOGS LOOK TO REBOUND IN OKC TODAY
Hogs close out weekend set at 3:05 p.m.
Oklahoma City- A win today would give the Rockford IceHogs a 3-1-0-0 week and would wash away the bitter taste left in their mouths after letting one get away on Saturday against the Oklahoma City Barons. Game time in today’s rematch is set for 3:05 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center.
The game can be heard on 1330 AM WNTA, www.wnta.com or on Comcast Cable Channel-57 in Rockford beginning at 2:35 p.m. with the U.S. Cellular Pregame Show. The game can be viewed on-line at www.ahllive.com.
Rockford dropped a game this season for the first when leading after two periods. Up 1-0 heading into the third period last night, the IceHogs gave up two power-play goals midway through the frame and dropped the game 2-1.
To add more salt to the wound, Rockford failed to break the game open when they failed to score on four first-period power plays of their own.
An up tempo style should benefit Rockford this afternoon as today’s game is the fifth in six days for the Barons. Goaltending hasn’t been the problem for the IceHogs as the combination of Alec Richards and Hannu Toivonen have a combined goals against average of 1.50 to go along with a .942 save percentage over Rockford’s last six games.
Today’s game is the third of six on the season between the two clubs and second of three at the Cox Convention Center. Rockford is 0-1-1-0 against the Barons through two games in 2010-11.
Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 7 vs. Toronto Marlies: Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Rockford returns home for the first time in 2011 for their annual home tilt against Toronto. The game is the first of two on the campaign with the Marlies.
SPECIAL TEAMS LET ICEHOGS DOWN AGAINST BARONS
Barons tally two power-play goals in 2-1 win
Oklahoma City- A tired and well traveled Oklahoma City Barons club was more than happy to take any opportunities that the Rockford IceHogs would give them on Saturday night. Two third-period power plays were just what they needed as they tallied on both of them to knock off the IceHogs 2-1 at the Cox Convention Center.
On flip side, Rockford couldn’t convert any of their five man advantages, including a chance moments after Oklahoma City had taken a third period lead.
Rockford grabbed their only marker in period two to take a 1-0 lead. Evan Brophey picked up a Rob Klinkhammer pass and fired his fourth goal of the season past Bryan Pitton at 11:11 of the middle stanza. Ben Smith also helped on the goal.
The Barons tied the game with a power-play goal from Colin McDonald. Hannu Toivonen turned away Alendre Giroux’s initial shot, but McDonald cleaned up the rebound for his 14th goal of the year at 11:50 of the third period.
Moments later the Barons found themselves on another power play and they again capitalized. Teemu Hartikainen’s shot was deflected into the right corner to Linus Omark who banked his 14th goal of the season off of Toivonen’s shoulder from behind the goal line and in for the eventual game-winner at 11:50 of the final period.
With Toivonen on the bench for the extra attacker, Rockford failed to get the equalizer past Pitton who earned his second win of the season after making 30 saves.
Toivonen had his six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-0-2) and three-game winning streak come to an end after making 24 saves.
Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 7 vs. Toronto Marlies: Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Rockford returns home for the first time in 2011 for their annual home tilt against Toronto. The game is the first of two on the campaign with the Marlies.

LATE THIRD PERIOD SURGE LIFTS ICEHOGS TO 3-1 WIN
Rockford has not lost in regulation to Houston in eight straight contests dating back to Jan. 10, 2010
Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs rallied in the third period to complete a comeback and defeat the Houston Aeros 3-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 6,116 at the Rockford MetroCentre on Thursday.
Rockford found themselves trailing 1-0 to start the third period but it didn’t take long for the IceHogs to get the equalizer. Shawn Lalonde's drive from the right circle was blocked down in traffic, but Mathis Olimb picked up the loose puck and lit the lamp to tie the game at 1-1 at 6:55.
With the Olimb goal putting the spark back in the Rockford offense, the IceHogs would continue to pour shots at Houston's goaltender Matt Hackett. After receiving a pass from Kyle Hagel, Ryan Stanton ripped a shot to the right back boards, the puck then ricocheted into the crease and Rob Klinkhammer came in and sent it home at 16:39 to give the IceHogs a 2-1 lead.
With time expiring the Aeros pulled Hackett for the extra attacker. Houston, however, failed to get the puck inside the IceHogs zone and a misguided pass led to a steal by Jeff Taffe. Taffe's pass got deflected to Hagel, who settled it down and sent the puck in for the empty net goal at 19:44 to seal the game at 3-1 for Rockford.
Houston got things started with a power-play tally late in the opening frame. Hannu Toivonen kicked away Tyler Cuma's initial shot but the Hogs couldn't clear it. Robbie Earl picked up the loose puck and slapped two more shots at Toivonen and one trickled to the back of the net to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead at 19:20. Cody Almond also registered an assist on the play.
Toivonen turned away 29 shots to pick up his seventh win of the season and extend his point streak to six straight decisions in which he has not lost in regulation (4-0-0-2). Hackett stopped 25 pucks in a losing effort.
Notes: Rockford's power play was held off the board in six chances and Houston went 1-for-5. The IceHogs picked up 13 points in December out of a possible 18. Hagel recorded his second multi-point game (1g-1a) of the season.
Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 7 vs. Toronto Marlies: Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Rockford returns home for the first time in 2011 for their annual home tilt against Toronto. The game is the first of two on the campaign with the Marlies.
